Floor Stand Globes
A Guest Post by Charles Pogue
Guess when I first thought I would like to have one of those floor stand globes?
It was on Saturday afternoon way back in the 1960s when we kids gathered around the TV and it was time for the broadcast of ABC’s Wide World of Sports to come on.
The introduction to the program always stuck in my mind, especially the first three words, “Spanning the globe.”
I have always liked having a good globe around the house, it kind of gives one the feeling of being a part of, and connected with, people from every continent and country.
Geography is Neglected
In the past several years, if not decades, geography has been all but forgotten in America’s schools.
I hear tell of some younger adults who have trouble finding the United States on a globe. This is a shame. I also heard about one person who was asked to name three foreign countries, and one of those the individual named was Africa. Africa, of course, is not a country, but a continent.
A good globe, and my choice would be a floor stand globe, would help us to overcome that lack of knowledge about the world in which we live.
How many mountain ranges and major rivers can you name, and locate them on the globe?

Floor globes are excellent educational tools for homeschool families to aid in learning world history, geography, and current events. They add a new dimension to watching the news and determining where events are occurring. Floor stand globes are not just educational tools though. They are beautiful decorations in a home, too.
My wife’s uncle has one of those nice globes that really adds something to his living room, especially since he has clocks from all over the world, too. I guess time and places really go together when you think about it.

There are seven continents. North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica.
Presently there are 193 sovereign nations in the world.
That changes from time to time, which may prompt one to purchase a new floor globe, or maybe not.
Floor globes have a wide range of prices, from about $100 to several thousand.
Do you have a floor globe in your home?
