Sopapilla Recipe

One of my family's favorite authentic Mexican desserts after a meal of Mexican food (meaning Tex-Mex), is a hot sopapilla served with honey.

There are several ways to serve sopapillas. Whether you prefer to eat them with honey, a dusting of sugar and cinnamon, or with ice cream on top, the recipe below will give you a good start to the perfect ending to a festive Mexican food meal. My family enjoys eating them with a drizzle of honey, which I enjoy, too, but I much prefer to roll them in a sugar and cinnamon mixture while they are still hot from the oil.

Sopapillas Recipe

  • 2 cups flour, sifted
  • 1 tbsp. aluminum free baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tablespoons lard, shortening, or butter
  • 3/4 cup water
  • oil, lard, or shortening for deep frying
  • honey
  1. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. With your fingers, mix in the lard, shortening, or butter until mixture resembles course breadcrumbs. Slowly stir in water, while using a fork to stir mixture until it clumps together and forms a soft dough.
  2. Shape dough into a ball and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth. Roll out into a very thin rectangle about 15X18 inches. Cut the dough into 3 inch squares with a sharp knife.
  3. Heat oil to 375 degrees F. Fry the puffs three or four at a time, depending on the size of the pan. As they brown and begin to puff, turn over and cook the other side. Remove the puffs with a slotted spoon and drain sopapillas on paper towels. Serve warm with honey, or roll in a mixture of 2 tbsp. sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon.
This recipe makes approximately 30 sopapillas.

I hope you enjoy this traditional Mexican recipe.

Great Mexican Food Recipes

Great Mexican Food Recipes

I've been thinking of Mexican food for some reason. Here are some of great posts on the topic.
  • Homemade Chili for a Crowd: Home made chili gives you the option of serving chili with crackers, or making several casseroles from the chili, including enchiladas or chili macaroni.
  • Mexican Food: Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas: Warm, homemade tortillas, with or without melted butter, are the crowning touches to any homecooked Mexican meal. Making your own means you can control the quality of ingredients and avoid the chemicals in most purchased tortillas.
  • Easy Mexican Recipe: Homemade Corn Tortillas: While store bought tortillas are fairly inexpensive, they contain preservatives and often use baking powder that has aluminum in it. A more healthful alternative is to make your own homemade corn tortillas.
  • Easy Mexican Recipes: For a Texas girl, Mexican food is a part of life. The tart taste of lime, the pungent, warm taste of chili powder, and the cool, flavors of tomato and avocado are all a part of this food.
